Natural explanations are not anti-theistic.
They describe mechanisms within providence.
Mystery does not imply randomness.

Even lament assumes sovereignty.
\r\nMystery invites trust, not nihilism.
\r\n\r\n\r\n“Walk humbly with your God.”

Theological maturity is measured not by:
• Systematic precision
But by:
• Reverent humility.

And today, it sits at the center of debates about angels, demons, Nephilim, spiritual warfare, and even modern supernatural narratives.
But what is the Book of Enoch really—and what should Christians do with it?
\r\n\r\nThe Book of Enoch (often called 1 Enoch) is an ancient Jewish apocalyptic text composed between roughly 300 BC and AD 100. It is attributed to Enoch, the great-grandfather of Noah, the man Scripture says:
\r\n\r\n\r\n“Enoch walked with God; then he was no more, because God took him.”
\r\n

That mysterious biblical statement fueled generations of speculation—and Enoch expands on it dramatically.
\r\nImportant clarity:
\r\n1 Enoch is not part of the Hebrew Bible
\r\nIt is not included in most Christian canons
\r\nIt is considered canonical only in the Ethiopian Orthodox Church
\r\nIt is not Scripture in the same sense as Genesis or the Gospels
\r\nBut non-canonical does not mean irrelevant.
\r\nThe New Testament itself references Enoch explicitly:
\r\n\r\n\r\n“Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied…”

\r\nThis tells us something critical:
Early Jewish and Christian audiences were familiar with Enoch, even if they did not treat it as Scripture.
Think of it like this:
Enoch functioned as theological background material, not doctrine.
The most famous—and controversial—section of Enoch expands on Genesis 6:1–4, where “the sons of God” take human wives and produce the Nephilim.

Enoch is not.
In Enoch:
\r\nThese beings are called Watchers
\r\nThey descend to Earth in rebellion
\r\nThey teach forbidden knowledge (weapons, sorcery, astrology)
\r\nTheir offspring become violent giants
\r\nTheir actions corrupt humanity
\r\nJudgment follows
\r\nThis interpretation was not fringe in antiquity.
Many Second Temple Jews—and some early Christians—read Genesis 6 this way.
One of Enoch’s most influential ideas is its explanation for demons.

\r\nThe Nephilim are destroyed
\r\nTheir spirits remain
\r\nThese spirits roam the earth
\r\nThey seek influence, oppression, and deception
\r\nThis concept later appears—stripped of Enoch’s narrative detail—in the New Testament worldview.
\r\nJesus casts out demons.
Paul speaks of spiritual powers.
The Gospels assume invisible hostile forces.
Enoch did not invent that worldview—it articulated one already present.

\r\nThe early Church rejected Enoch for several reasons:
\r\nPseudonymous authorship
\r\nSpeculative cosmology
\r\nExcessive angelology
\r\nDoctrinal ambiguity
\r\nIn other words:
Enoch explains too much.
Scripture, by contrast, often limits detail intentionally.
\r\nThat restraint is part of biblical wisdom.
\r\nThe danger today is not reading Enoch—it’s reading Enoch as Scripture.

\r\nTreat Enoch as secret revelation
\r\nBuild entire doctrines on it
\r\nUse it to justify speculative cosmology
\r\nBlend it with conspiracy theories
\r\nOverride clear biblical teaching
\r\nThat reverses the proper order.
\r\nEnoch can illuminate Scripture.
It must never replace it.
Used properly, Enoch helps explain why:

\r\nKnowledge can be corruptive
\r\nPower divorced from obedience leads to destruction

\r\nUsed improperly, it fuels:

\r\nObsession with demons

\r\nDistrust of Scripture’s sufficiency

Many modern readers try to retrofit Enoch into:
\r\nUFO narratives
\r\nAlien mythology
\r\nAncient astronaut theories
\r\nBut this misunderstands both Enoch and Scripture.
\r\nEnoch’s worldview is theological, not technological.
Its concern is obedience and rebellion, not spaceships.
The danger isn’t that Enoch supports modern myths—
it’s that modern myths imitate ancient spiritual deception.
Despite all its strangeness, Enoch has a surprisingly consistent moral arc:
\r\nRebellion leads to judgment
\r\nForbidden knowledge corrupts
\r\nGod restrains evil
\r\nRighteousness matters
\r\nJudgment is real
\r\nThose themes align with Scripture—not replace it.
\r\nA mature approach looks like this:
\r\nRespect it as ancient Jewish literature
\r\nLearn from its historical context
\r\nLet it clarify—not dominate—biblical passages
\r\nReject speculative excess
\r\nAnchor doctrine in canonical Scripture
\r\nIn short:
\r\n\r\n\r\nEnoch can inform your understanding—but Christ must remain your authority.
\r\n
The fascination with Enoch reveals something about us.
\r\nWe want hidden knowledge.
We want cosmic explanations.
We want certainty about unseen powers.
But Scripture reminds us:
\r\n\r\n\r\n“The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things revealed belong to us.”
\r\n

The Book of Enoch reminds us what happens when curiosity outruns obedience.
\r\nAnd that may be its greatest value of all.
\r\nIf 1 Enoch explores the fall of heavenly beings and the corruption of the earth, then 2 Enoch and 3 Enoch move in a different—but related—direction.
\r\nThey are not primarily about rebellion.
They are about ascent, hierarchy, transformation, and heavenly order.
Together, they show how later Jewish thought continued to wrestle with questions Scripture leaves intentionally restrained:
\r\nWhat is heaven like?
\r\nHow is authority structured in the unseen realm?
\r\nWhat happens to a righteous man taken into God’s presence?
\r\nHow close can a human come to divine glory without becoming divine?
\r\nThese questions are ancient—and dangerous—if handled without humility.
\r\n2 Enoch, often called Slavonic Enoch, likely dates to the 1st century AD, though the surviving manuscripts are medieval and preserved in Old Church Slavonic.
\r\nUnlike 1 Enoch, which focuses on cosmic rebellion, 2 Enoch centers on Enoch’s heavenly ascent.
\r\nHere, Enoch:
\r\nIs taken alive into heaven
\r\nTravels through multiple heavenly levels
\r\nEncounters angels, cosmic order, and divine mysteries
\r\nReceives revelation about creation, time, and judgment
\r\nIs transformed before returning briefly to earth
\r\n2 Enoch is far less interested in fallen angels and far more concerned with cosmic structure.
\r\nIt emphasizes:
\r\nGod’s absolute sovereignty
\r\nAngelic obedience
\r\nFixed boundaries between heaven and earth
\r\nThe danger of unauthorized knowledge
\r\nThis is important.
\r\nWhile 1 Enoch shows what happens when angels cross boundaries, 2 Enoch reinforces that boundaries matter.
\r\nOne of the most striking elements of 2 Enoch is Enoch’s transformation:
\r\nHis body is altered
\r\nHis garments change
\r\nHis face shines
\r\nHe is instructed directly by angels
\r\nThis echoes later biblical moments:
\r\nMoses’ shining face (Exodus 34)
\r\nIsaiah’s throne-room vision
\r\nPaul’s language of transformation
\r\nBut 2 Enoch presses further—sometimes uncomfortably so—by detailing the process.
\r\nThis is where discernment is required.
\r\nThe early Church rejected 2 Enoch for familiar reasons:
\r\nOver-elaboration
\r\nMystical cosmology
\r\nSpeculative detail
\r\nLack of apostolic grounding
\r\nScripture gives us glimpses.
2 Enoch gives us tours.
And Scripture consistently warns that not all knowledge is meant for public use.
\r\n\r\n\r\n“He heard inexpressible things, things that no one is permitted to tell.”

Paul experienced heaven—and refused to describe it.
\r\nThat silence matters.
\r\n3 Enoch (also called Sefer Hekhalot) is much later—likely 5th–6th century AD—and reflects early Jewish mystical traditions, particularly Merkabah mysticism.
\r\nThis text moves decisively away from biblical narrative and into mystical system-building.
\r\nIts most famous—and controversial—claim is that Enoch becomes Metatron, a supreme angelic figure.
\r\nIn 3 Enoch:
\r\nEnoch is transformed into Metatron
\r\nHe is given authority
\r\nHe sits near the divine throne
\r\nHe governs angelic orders
\r\nThis is where Christian theology draws a firm line.
\r\nScripture allows:
\r\nExaltation by God
\r\nHonor for obedience
\r\nAuthority under Christ
\r\nScripture does not allow:
\r\nDeification of humans
\r\nNear-equal status with God
\r\nAngelic mediation replacing Christ
\r\nThis is why 3 Enoch was never considered compatible with Christian doctrine.
\r\nDespite their problems, 2 and 3 Enoch are valuable as warnings.
\r\nThey show how quickly fascination with the unseen can:
\r\nShift from obedience to curiosity
\r\nTurn reverence into hierarchy obsession
\r\nReplace covenant with technique
\r\nBlur the Creator–creature distinction
\r\nThis is not merely ancient history.
\r\nThese same patterns appear today in:
\r\nMysticism divorced from Scripture
\r\nAngel-focused spirituality
\r\nObsession with ranks, realms, and keys
\r\nClaims of special access or elevation
\r\nThe Bible consistently resists this drift.
\r\nOne of the great ironies is that Scripture teaches spiritual warfare clearly—without indulging in elaborate cosmology.

\r\nThe enemy exists
\r\nAuthority is real
\r\nChrist is supreme
\r\nThe believer stands firm through truth, righteousness, and faith
\r\nHe does not give maps of heaven.

\r\nLet Scripture remain the measuring rod
\r\nKeep Christ—not angels—at the center
\r\nThe New Testament is deliberately restrained because restraint protects worship.
\r\nIf 1 Enoch warns us about rebellion,
2 Enoch warns us about curiosity,
and 3 Enoch warns us about exaltation.
All three ultimately point to the same truth:
\r\n\r\n\r\nThe unseen realm is real—but it is not ours to control, map, or master.
\r\n
The gospel does not call believers to secret knowledge.
\r\nIt calls us to faithfulness.
\r\nAnd that, Scripture insists, is enough.
\r\nAt first glance, the Book of Enoch and the Book of Revelation can feel uncannily similar.
\r\nBoth describe:
\r\nHeavenly visions
\r\nAngels and judgment
\r\nCosmic conflict
\r\nThrones, fire, and glory
\r\nThe downfall of evil powers
\r\nBecause of this overlap, many readers assume the two books are doing the same thing—or worse, that Revelation depends on Enoch.
\r\nIt doesn’t.
\r\nUnderstanding why they sound similar but function differently is essential for spiritual discernment.
\r\nBoth 1 Enoch and Revelation emerge from what scholars call apocalyptic literature—a genre common in Jewish thought between 300 BC and AD 100.
\r\nThis genre uses:
\r\nSymbolism instead of plain description
\r\nVisions instead of narratives
\r\nCosmic imagery to describe earthly and spiritual realities
\r\nThat shared language explains overlap without implying equal authority.
\r\nJesus, Paul, and John all spoke into a culture already familiar with this imagery.
\r\n1 Enoch describes God seated in glory, surrounded by angelic beings.
Revelation shows a throne room with elders, living creatures, and worship.
But here’s the difference:
\r\nIn Enoch, angels dominate the scene
\r\nIn Revelation, the Lamb is central
\r\n\r\n\r\n“Worthy is the Lamb who was slain.” (Revelation 5:12)
\r\n
Christ—not angels—anchors the vision.
\r\nBoth books describe judgment on rebellious beings.
\r\n1 Enoch focuses heavily on fallen angels (Watchers)
\r\nRevelation focuses on Satan, the Beast, Babylon, and human systems aligned with evil
\r\nEnoch looks backward to pre-Flood rebellion.
Revelation looks forward to final restoration.
Both depict the universe as morally contested.

Whether it’s reports of strange lights in the sky, declassified government documents, or the new smash podcast High Strange, the little green guys from space (or gray, depending on who you ask) are gaining unprecedented ground in our collective consciousness.
\r\n\r\nNo matter if you consider yourself an extraterrestrial skeptic, believer, or somewhere in between, you might be wondering: does the Bible have anything to say about UFOs or little green men?
\r\n\r\n
SO, WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY ABOUT ALIENS?
\r\n\r\n
To be short—nothing really. The Bible doesn’t specifically address the possibility of life outside our home planet. Yes, there are a few key passages that Ancient Aliens wants you to believe are referring to aliens in the Bible (like the inaugural vision of Ezekiel in chapter 1 or Jesus’ remarks about “sheep from another fold” in John 10:6), but those interpretations feel like major contortions at best.
\r\n\r\n
At its core, the Bible is a book about God and his interactions with life on earth. While the story occasionally peaks its head above the surface of our pale blue dot to bask in God’s creative grandeur (like Psalm 8 or Psalm 19), its major focus drops the “extra” and tends to stay pretty terrestrial.
\r\n\r\n
WE SHOULDN’T TAKE THE ABSENCE OF ALIENS IN THE BIBLE TO MEAN NONEXISTENCE.
\r\n\r\n
Because, well, the Bible is absent about lots of things. There’s nothing in the Bible about the Internet, DNA, or the airspeed velocity of an unladen European swallow… and yet we know and love all three of those things (that’s a Monty Python joke, Mom, just keep reading).
\r\n\r\n
However, the Bible is perfectly clear that life beyond humanity does exist. There are living beings that occupy time and space with influence over our lives; they just don’t make it a point to visit Roswell regularly. The good ones, who serve God, we call angels; the not-so-good ones, we call demons. (And ‘no,’ I don’t think aliens are demons—or angels—in disguise.)
\r\n\r\n
But even if the Bible doesn’t specifically talk about the possibility of UFOs or interplanetary visitors, scripture still speaks loud and clear on topics that could (and should) inform how we think about the intersection of aliens and faith. With all due respect to my favorite alien investigators, ‘the truth’ is not ‘out there’. It’s actually inside that old book.
\r\n\r\n
Enough preamble; it’s time for probing…the Bible. Below are four scriptural truths to inform (and possibly challenge) your thinking on the possibility of extraterrestrial life.
\r\n\r\n
4 SCRIPTURAL TRUTHS FOR NAVIGATING THE BIBLE AND ALIENS
\r\n\r\n
#1: GOD IS CREATOR… SPACE IS BIG… WE ARE SMALL
\r\nThe Bible is clear from the first two pages: God is the driving force behind everything we see (and even the things we don’t). The very first sentence in the Bible says:
\r\n\r\n
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. (Genesis 1:1)
\r\n\r\n
For the English majors out there, you’ll notice that heavens in that passage are plural, as is the original Hebrew word from which it was translated. We could make conjectures about why that is, but I tend to think it’s to signify the vast expanse of what God has made. Just as monarchs use plural pronouns to signal their power and prowess, the original word for everything above the earth is plural.
\r\n\r\n
That’s just a fancy way of saying the obvious: space is huge… and mankind has only managed to explore an infinitesimally small amount of it. But what we have seen is striking. The thing is utterly beautiful. Seriously, go Google ‘James Webb Space Telescope’. It’s like God built us a home inside the Louvre and then put that inside the Grand Canyon. Everywhere we look, we’re surrounded by masterpieces—on the surface of the earth and well beyond it.
\r\n\r\n
The Bible makes the case that creation, from cicadas to the cosmos, is meant to push our eyes beyond what we can see. Paul, an early leader in the church, explains that even though we can’t see God, creation speaks of Him. In Romans 1:20, he writes, “God’s invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived…. in the things that have been made.” Hundreds of years earlier, King David was so enraptured by creation that he poetically gave it the ability to worship. “The heavens declare the glory of God,” he wrote in Psalm 19, “The sky proclaims the work of His hands.”
\r\n\r\n
The immensity and beauty of creation, especially space, draw me to God in awe…and it reminds me how itty bitty we truly are. David expresses the same feeling in Psalm 8:3-4:
\r\nWhen I observe your heavens, The work of your fingers, The moon and the stars which you set in place, What is man that You remember him?
\r\n\r\n
God knows no limits except the ones He chooses to observe. What the combined knowledge of history understands of science, physics, or quantum mechanics (or even theology for that matter) is only the smallest sliver of a much larger pie that only God can serve.
\r\n\r\n
I’m not saying that God created intelligent life on other planets, just that that topic doesn’t have to fit into my little boxes of understanding to be true. But one thing I know I can nail down: if there is life on other planets, God is the author of it. In his letter to the Colossians, Paul makes that abundantly clear. Writing about Jesus, he says:
\r\n“He is the image of the invisible God… * *By Him everything was created, in heaven and on earth, The visible and the invisible… All things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and by Him all things hold together.”(Colossians 1:15-17)
\r\n\r\n
In summation: God is the creator of all life on this planet, as well as any that potentially lies beyond it.
\r\n\r\n
#2: YOU’RE KIND OF A BIG DEAL
\r\nThere’s a good kind of humility that comes from considering the immensity of space, but it’s counterbalanced by another scriptural truth: you’re pretty dang important. No, there’s no Bible passage that specifically says, “Thou art a big deal,” but well before the world knew of Ron Burgundy, God proved it through his actions.
\r\n\r\n
You were born on this incredible planet hurtling through space…and it just so happens to be the very place God chose to make Himself known, the place where heaven comes crashing into human existence. If there was ever an interdimensional portal, it was Earth.
\r\n\r\n
It started with a garden (Genesis 1 & 2), where the Divine and the human lived alongside each other. When that went sideways, God adopted a childless, elderly couple and made them into a nation that would belong to Him (Genesis 12). He gave this nation plans for a tabernacle and then a temple, where His spirit would once more dwell among them (Exodus 40:34; 2 Chronicles 7:1-3). But God wasn’t content to stay behind four walls.
\r\n\r\n
He came, in the form of man, to a little backwater town called Bethlehem (Merry Christmas). He lived among people—touched, healed, laughed, ate, cried, and worked with them. He died, came back to life, and imparted those people with power (Acts 1:8). And His plan is to come back again, making this planet (yes, this one… the one you live on) the seat of His eternal kingdom (Revelation 21-22).
\r\n\r\n
How lucky are you that you’re an earthling? It boggles the mind.
\r\n\r\n
But it also goes well beyond just the planet you inhabit—God has things to say about you. Yes, you, specifically. Like that you were created in His image, reflecting His divine nature (Genesis 1:27). That He knit you together, intricately weaving you into a work of art (Psalm 139:13-14). The prophet Zephaniah says God sings over you, and Isaiah says God calls you by name, claiming you as His own (Zephaniah 3:17, Isaiah 43:1-5).
\r\n\r\n
The New Testament letters say you’re a masterpiece, allowed to approach God’s throne with confidence, the very place where the Divine is pleased to dwell (Ephesians 2:10, Ephesians 3:12, Galatians 2:20). The God who created blackholes and the outer reaches of the universe calls you His child (1 John 3:1).
\r\n\r\n
But of course, the true value of anything—you, your car, a limited edition comic book—comes from the price someone is willing to pay for it. Romans 5:8 takes that check to the bank, insisting that Christ willingly died for you while you were undeserving. How about one more time, for the people in the back? You were valuable enough for God’s son to die in order to rescue you. That’s value beyond anything else on this planet.
\r\n\r\n
Wait, I thought this was about the Bible and aliens? Right.
\r\n\r\n
One of the most frequent arguments against extraterrestrial life, at least from followers of Christ, is that life on other planets would lessen the importance of life on Earth. Which in my experience, doesn’t make too much sense, because I’m a parent of three kids. Did kid #2 lessen my love for kid #1? Of course not. If anything, it enhanced it because each of them reflects parts of my nature (and my wife’s) in different but beautifully complementary ways. Kid #3 did the same.
\r\n\r\n
If God wanted to plant sentient life halfway around the corner from Alpha Centauri, that doesn’t make me less consequential. If anything, it makes me more so because now I’m forced to confront a question of staggering importance: how am I representing the God who made me?
\r\n\r\n
#3 YOU HAD ONE JOB
\r\n\r\n
My non-scientific survey of alien movies calculates that nearly 90% of them involve this plot: aliens show up, battles ensue; we eventually win, but a lovable side character gets sacrificed in the process.
\r\n\r\n
Why do most of our cultural narratives about the possibility of extraterrestrial life jump right to cataclysmic battles and the Fresh Prince face-punching aliens? For followers of Christ, the Bible’s pretty clear about our role in regard to other life (human or alien): we represent Jesus.
\r\n\r\n
In 2 Corinthians 5, Paul gives you a weighty and diplomatic title—ambassador. You’re an envoy of God’s love; a diplomat sent out to spread his grace; a representative of Christ Himself. What’s the King’s expectation of His ambassadors? Reconciliation.
\r\n\r\n
God… through Christ reconciled us to Himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation… entrusting us with the message of reconciliation. Therefore we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us… be reconciled to God. (2 Corinthians 5:18-20)
\r\n\r\n
I realize all this lives strictly in the hypothetical camp since we don’t even know if alien life exists. But for the sake of argument, it’s worth noting that every follower of Christ is considered His ambassador to the world around them. I’ll be the first to admit—sometimes I do a good job representing him, and other times, I do a really awful job.
\r\n\r\n
But if E.T. did ever show up on planet Earth, I hope the people of God would be the first to recognize that our primary role is representing Christ well. We’d need to ask ourselves deeply important questions: does this non-human life know God? What do they know of Jesus? Did God do a redemptive work on their home planet, as He did through the sacrifice of Jesus on earth?
\r\n\r\n
If not, then we have the most important information available to this species—reconciliation with God is possible.
\r\n\r\n
To creation that is groaning under the weight of separation, we literally have one job: show (and tell) the love of God. That’s why we’re sent out as envoys in this world. Why we’re made representatives, why we’re named as ambassadors. That’s going to be rather hard to do if our first reaction to anything we don’t understand is “shoot it with a laser gun.”
\r\n\r\n
In Romans 8, Paul paints our reconciliation work in a wide stroke. It’s worthwhile to consider what he means by “all” and the ramifications for you as an ambassador.
\r\n\r\n
All creation is waiting eagerly for that future day when God will reveal who his children really are…creation looks forward to the day when it will join God’s children in glorious freedom from death and decay. (Romans 8:19-20) (NLT)
\r\n\r\n
#4: THEY WALK AMONG US… (KIND OF)
\r\n\r\n
Considering the possibility and ramifications of extraterrestrial life can be a helpful thought exercise, but it won’t be more than that until it moves from your head into your hands. It’s the things you do, not the things you think, that give your life power.
\r\n\r\n
Wait? How am I supposed to take action when we don’t even know if extraterrestrial life exists? Here’s the M. Night Shyamalan twist ending: they’re already here.
\r\n\r\n
There are aliens all around you. They’re your neighbors; friends at work; the helpful cashier at the grocery store; the kids’ soccer coach; even your mother-in-law. There was a time you were an alien too—maybe you still are.
\r\n\r\n
To followers of Christ, sometimes it’s easy to forget that fact. I’ll raise my hand and say I’m guilty. I tend to live my life caught up in my own story and plans, oblivious to the aliens around me. Paul, seeing this in a church he cared deeply about, writes to shake them (and me) from slumber:
\r\n“Remember that you were at a time separated from Christ, alienated… having no hope and without God in the world.” (Ephesians 2:12)
\r\n\r\n
While I scroll through the Pentagon’s UFO report, actual people I know and love remain alienated from their source of hope—cut off from God. I waste time considering theoreticals about little green men and miss the actuals living on all sides of me.
\r\n\r\n
I believe what we’ve said about aliens is true of everyone you’ll cross paths with today. God created them—the friendly ones, the hostile ones, the pretty ones, the cranky ones. God loves them as much as He loves you in a way that elevates their importance without diminishing yours. If you’re a follower of Jesus, you’re an ambassador of reconciliation. It’s our one job to show that life with God is better than alienation…and that it’s available right now.
\r\n\r\n
That’s true about the neighbor who always leaves their trash cans out two days longer than they should. It’s true about your cousin, who won’t stop posting embarrassing things on Facebook. It’s true of the Democrat and the Republican; the American and the Chinese national; the rich and the poor.
\r\n\r\n
There is hope, and it’s our job to bring it to all the aliens out there.
\r\nBut now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. For He Himself is our peace… [that He] might reconcile us both to God… So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God” (Ephesians 2:13-14,16,19)
\r\n\r\n
I write this to remind myself because I’m prone to miss the forest for the trees. I’d rather rewatch The X-Files and have stimulating conversations about the intersection of theology and extraterrestrials than actually incarnate the hope of a reconciled life to the people around me. But I have one job… and I actually believe God intends for me to do it.
\r\n\r\n
The “aliens” are already here, but so is the truth that a life reconciled to our shared Creator is possible. The question is: can we stop shooting at them long enough to actually show it?
\r\n\r\n
LAND THE STARSHIP
\r\nTo quote the late, great, Bowie, could there really be a “starman, waiting in the sky?” Honestly, I have no idea. But yes, or no, my faith wouldn’t take a hit. Little green men or not, I would still believe a God of love created the universe, and is working (even using us) to reconcile all of creation back to Him.
\r\n\r\n
If a UFO lands in my backyard tonight, I want to think I’d greet the inhabitants the same way I’d greet my neighbors Dave, or Bill, or Robyn. But in the meantime, I should be more concerned with how I’m showing love to the people who live around me, before I worry about visitors from outer space.
\r\n\r\n
For followers of Christ, the biggest question isn’t what’s out there, but what’s inside of us, coming out everyday through our choices, words, and actions?
\r\n\r\n
Space is dark, and Jesus was clear about what we are supposed to be.
\r\n\r\n
You are the light of the world… let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. (Matthew 5:14, 16) (NLT)

The aliens are everywhere. So “shine among them, like stars in the sky” (Philppians 4:15).

Are aliens in the Bible?
\r\n\r\n
Let’s start with getting on the same page about what we’re talking about when we talk about aliens.
\r\n\r\nA true definition of alien is “anything that belongs to a foreign territory.” Someone who is not a citizen of a country they reside in would be considered an “alien.” In the plant and animal world, alien species to a region are often called “invasive species.”
\r\n\r\n
If we’re talking about aliens to Earth, an alien could refer to any being that is not from Earth. Spiritual beings (like angels and demons) that interact with our world could be included in that group. Scripture clearly indicates these beings exist.
\r\n\r\n
If you want to call angels and demons “aliens,” because they are foreign to Earth, then sure there are aliens in the Bible.
\r\n\r\n
You are probably reading this because you want to know if the Bible teaches anything about life on other planets. So our working definition of aliens will not include angels or demons, since they are spiritual beings, not organisms.
\r\n\r\n
Our working definition of alien is “any extraterrestrial lifeform, foreign to earth.” Starting there, the Bible doesn’t have anything to say about them.
\r\n\r\n
About the potential for organisms to exist somewhere else in the universe besides planet Earth, the Bible doesn’t definitively say anything about that, either.
\r\n\r\n
What we can be confident of is that God created the heavens and the Earth. He created the entire universe. On planet Earth, Jesus Christ came to save sinful humanity.
\r\n\r\n
Are aliens demons?
\r\n\r\n
Given that the definition of “alien” refers to any foreign being, there is room for the term being used to describe a demonic being, but in Scripture, demonic beings are spiritual beings. They are part of the spiritual realm, not another planet.
\r\n\r\n
The spiritual realm does interact with the world throughout the Scriptures.
\r\n\r\n
For example, Ephesians 6:12 talks about an enemy that is not flesh and blood, but that includes: “rulers, authorities, powers, and forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”
\r\n\r\n
2 Corinthians 10:4-5 talks about fighting a spiritual enemy with “weapons not of this world.”
\r\n\r\n
In Matthew, chapter 4, the “tempter” meets Jesus in the wilderness.
\r\n\r\n
So whether they are considered “aliens” or not, demons are spiritual beings that sided with Satan as an enemy of God and “lost their place in heaven.”
\r\n\r\n
Scripture says they were “hurled to the earth” (Revelation 12:7-9) where they engage with humanity in an attempt to keep people from salvation.
\r\n\r\n
In most Biblical references to demons, people are “possessed” or “filled with” a demonic spirit.
\r\n\r\n
So could someone have had a demonic experience and determined that it was an alien? Well, sure!
\r\n\r\n
Are angels aliens?
\r\n\r\n
As with demons, angels are foreign beings to earth, so there is room for the term “alien” to be used to describe them. And there are many more biblical references of angels appearing like humans and interacting with humans on earth. But they do not seem to stay on earth for long periods of time.
\r\n\r\n
Angels certainly could also be mistaken for extraterrestrial beings, and could even be mistaken for being human, as the writer of Hebrews states:
\r\n\r\n
“Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.” (Hebrews 13:2)
\r\n\r\n
Angels often interacted with humans throughout the Old and New Testaments. Here are some examples:
\r\n\r\n
· Genesis 18: Abraham encounters three strangers that he does not realize are angels.
\r\n· Numbers 22: Balaam and his donkey encounter an angel in the road.
\r\n· Joshua 5: Joshua encounters the “commander of the army of the Lord.”
\r\n· 2 Kings 6: Elisha and the army of angels
\r\n· In Matthew and Luke’s gospel accounts, Zachariah, Mary, and Joseph all have encounters with angels.
\r\n· Luke 2: a “host” of angels engage with a group of shepherds
\r\n\r\n
All angels are ministering servants sent to serve those who will inherit salvation, according to Hebrews 1:14. They are distinctly separate (and in service and submission to) Jesus. They ensure that God’s will ultimately is accomplished.
\r\n\r\n
In the Bible, angels have many purposes when they engage with humans. Here are some examples:
\r\n\r\n
· Psalm 91:11: They will “guard” God’s people in all ways.
\r\n· Psalm 34:7: They “encamp” around those who fear God and “deliver” them.
\r\n· Luke 15:10: They “rejoice” when sinners repent
\r\n· Exodus 23:20: They prepared the way for Israel to enter the promised land.
\r\nMatthew 4:11: After Satan was done tempting Jesus, he was attended to by angels.
\r\n\r\n
Could someone have had an angelic experience and determined that it was an alien? Well, absolutely. Hebrews 13 even indicates that angels have engaged humanity without humanity even knowing.
\r\n\r\n
Aliens and Christianity: What would the existence of aliens mean for Christianity?
\r\n\r\n
If someone proved the existence of alien life in the universe, it would not negate any of the truth of Scripture.
\r\n\r\n
There is no conflict in the Bible with the potential for life outside Earth.
\r\n\r\n
Scripture claims that God created the heavens and the Earth. All people are created in the image of God. Jesus is the only way to salvation. The Bible is God-breathed and useful for us in following Jesus. All that is still true if science finds extraterrestrial life.
\r\n\r\n
We were created with the ability to wonder. In many ways, this is a beautiful gift. It causes us to explore and ponder the depths of God and His creation. When we look at a night sky filled with stars, God’s majesty and awe are on display.
\r\n\r\n
Exploring the universe opens us up to a whole new picture of how great our God is. If someday we find life, even intelligent life, somewhere other than Earth, that doesn’t diminish anything in Scripture.
\r\n\r\n
Ultimately, if we follow Jesus, we are “not of this world” anyway. We are called to live as sons and daughters of heaven. We are called to bring the way of heaven to life on Earth. When we talk of an “other-worldly” way of living, that is not of “human nature,” we naturally spark curiosity beyond Earth and humanity. There is something “alien” about making a personal decision to deny oneself, take up a cross, and follow Jesus.

What do angels look like? Why were they created? And what do angels do? Humans have always held a fascination for angels and angelic beings. For centuries artists have tried to capture images of angels on canvas.
\r\n\r\nIt may surprise you to know that the Bible describes angels nothing at all like they are typically depicted in paintings. (You know, those cute little chubby babies with wings?) A passage in Ezekiel 1:1-28 gives a brilliant description of angels as four-winged creatures. In Ezekiel 10:20, we are told these angels are called cherubim.

Most angels in the Bible have the appearance and form of a man. Many of them have wings, but not all. Some are larger than life. Others have multiple faces that appear like a man from one angle, and a lion, ox, or eagle from another angle. Some angels are bright, shining, and fiery, while others look like ordinary humans. Some angels are invisible, yet their presence is felt, and their voice is heard.

21 Fascinating Facts About Angels in the Bible
\r\n\r\n
Angels are mentioned 273 times in the Bible. Although we won't look at every instance, this study will offer a comprehensive look at what the Bible says about these fascinating creatures.
\r\n\r\n
1 - Angels were created by God.
\r\n\r\n
In the second chapter of the Bible, we are told that God created the heavens and the earth, and everything in them. The Bible indicates that angels were created at the same time the earth was formed, even before human life was created.
\r\n\r\n
Thus the heavens and the earth, and all the host of them, were finished. For centuries, artists have portrayed angels as beautiful humans with wings and glowing light, complete with halos, harps, and flowing white gowns (or perfectly sculpted bodies). But is that really what angels look like? Angels have inspired all sorts of imaginative stories and depictions, but what’s left when we separate fact from fiction? In order to know the truth, we have to ask, what does the Bible say about angels?
\r\n\r\n
14 Biblical facts about angels
\r\n\r\nThese facts will help us learn a lot about the angels in the Bible: what they are, why God created them, how their hierarchy works, and much more.
\r\n\r\n
1. God created angels
\r\nAngels haven’t always existed. According to Scripture, they’re part of the universe God created. In a passage that refers to angels (the “host” or “armies” of heaven), we read, “You are the Lord, you alone; you have made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host . . . and the host of heaven worships you” (Nehemiah 9:6). In the New Testament, Paul tells us that God created all things “visible and invisible,” and specifically includes the angelic world with the phrase “whether thrones or dominions or principalities or authorities” (Colossians 1:16).
\r\n\r\n
While these Bible verses tell us that God created angels, the Bible also suggests that they don’t “exist” in the same way we do. The author of Hebrews suggests that all angels are “spirits” (Hebrews 1:13-14). When Jesus appears to the disciples, he asserts that “spirits” don’t have bodies like he does (Luke 24:39). In the Bible, angels can’t usually be seen by humans unless God reveals them (see Numbers 22:31, 2 Kings 6:17, Luke 2:13). However, from time to time angels took on a bodily form and appeared to various people in Scripture (Matthew 28:5; Hebrews 13:2).

2. There are three types of angels in the Bible
\r\nScripture names three categories of heavenly beings that appear to be types of angels: cherubim, seraphim, and “living creatures.”
\r\n\r\n
Cherubim
\r\nCherubim are mentioned in several places throughout Scripture:
\r\n\r\n
· They guarded the entrance to the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3:24).
\r\n· God is enthroned above them (Ezekiel 10:1–22).
\r\n· God rides on them (Psalm 18:10)
\r\n· Two golden figures of cherubim sit above the Ark of the Covenant, where God promised to dwell among his people (Exodus 25:22, see also verses 18–21).
\r\n\r\n
Seraphim
\r\nAnother type of angel, the seraphim, are only mentioned once in the Bible. They appear in Isaiah 6:2–7, where they continually worship the Lord and say, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory” (Isaiah 6:3).
\r\n\r\n
Living creatures
\r\nEzekiel and Revelation speak of other kinds of heavenly beings known as “living creatures” around God’s throne (Ezekiel 1:5–14, Revelation 4:6–8). They appeared like a lion, an ox, a man, and an eagle, representing various parts of God’s creation (wild beasts, domesticated animals, human beings, and birds). They, too, worship God continually: “Day and night they never cease to sing, ‘Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!’” (Revelation 4:8)

3. Angels have a hierarchy
\r\nAngels in the Bible appear to have a rank and order. The angel hierarchy is supported by Jude 9, when the angel Michael is called an “archangel”—a title that indicates rule or authority over other angels. He’s also called “one of the chief princes” in Daniel 10:13, and appears to lead God’s angelic army in Revelation 12: “Now war arose in heaven, Michael and his angels fighting against the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought, but they were defeated” (Revelation 12:7–8). Paul also tells us that the Lord will return from heaven “with the archangel’s call” (1 Thessalonians 4:16). Scripture doesn’t tell us if this refers to Michael, or if there are other archangels as well.
\r\n\r\n
4. Only two angels have names in the Bible
\r\nOnly two angels are specifically named in Scripture. As we said above, the archangel Michael is mentioned in Jude 9, Revelation 12:7–8, and Daniel 10:13 21.
\r\n\r\n
Gabriel is the only other angel named in the Bible. He’s mentioned in Daniel 8:16 9:21 as a messenger who comes from God to speak to Daniel. He’s also identified as God’s messenger in Luke 1. He tells Zechariah, “I am Gabriel, who stand in the presence of God” (Luke 1:19). Then we read, “In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin . . . and the virgin’s name was Mary” (Luke 1:26–27).
\r\n\r\n
5. Angels are not omnipresent
\r\nAngels frequently appear as messengers in the Bible, traveling from one place to another (see the verse above, where Gabriel “was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth”).
\r\n\r\n
The fact that angels are not omnipresent is made explicit when an angel comes to Daniel and says:
\r\n“I have come because of your words. The prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me twenty-one days; but Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, so I left him there with the prince of the kingdom of Persia and came to make you understand what is to befall your people in the latter days.” —Daniel 10:12–14
\r\n\r\n
If angels were omnipresent, Michael wouldn’t have “came to help” because he would’ve already been there, and this angel wouldn’t need to leave Michael to bring this message. Unlike God, who is omnipresent, angels are finite creatures, limited to one place at one time.
\r\n\r\n
6. We don’t know how many angels exist
\r\nThe Bible doesn’t tell us how many angels God created. But apparently, there are a lot of them. Here are a few of the ways the Bible tells us how many angels there are:
\r\n\r\n
· On Mount Sinai, God “came from the ten thousands of holy ones, with flaming fire at his right hand” (Deuteronomy 33:2).
\r\n· We also learn that, “the chariots of God are tens of thousands and thousands of thousands” (Psalm 68:17 NIV).
\r\n· When we come to worship, we come into the presence of “innumerable angels” (Hebrews 12:22).
\r\n· John says, “I heard around the throne and the living creatures and the elders the voice of many angels, numbering myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands” (Revelation 5:11).
\r\n\r\n
Every biblical reference to the total number of angels suggests that they’re beyond counting.
\r\n\r\n
7. We can't prove that guardian angels exist
\r\nThe Bible clearly tells us that God sends angels to protect people: “He will give his angels charge of you to guard you in all your ways. On their hands they will bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone” (Psalm 91:11–12).
\r\n\r\n
But are these what we think of as “guardian angels”? Jesus’ words in Matthew 18:10 seem to support the idea that individual people (or at least children) have guardian angels, “in heaven their angels always behold the face of my Father who is in heaven.” But Jesus may only mean that angels are assigned to protect little children in general. (In sports terms, the angels may be playing “zone” rather than “man-on-man” defense.)
\r\n\r\n
When the disciples in Acts 12:15 say that Peter’s “angel” must be knocking at the door, this doesn’t necessarily imply that they believe in individual guardian angels. It’s possible that they believed an angel was simply guarding Peter at that time.
\r\n\r\n
While arguments can be made, there seems to be no definitive biblical proof for the existence of “guardian angels.”
\r\n\r\n
8. Angels do not marry
\r\nJesus taught that in the resurrection people “neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven” (Matthew 22:30, see also Luke 20:34–36). This clearly suggests that angels don’t marry.
\r\n\r\n
No other passages address relationships between angels, so anything beyond this is simply speculation.
\r\n\r\n
9. Angels are very powerful
\r\nAngels are called “mighty ones who do his word” (Psalm 103:20), “powers” (see Ephesians 1:21), and “dominions” and “authorities” (Colossians 1:16). They are certainly “greater in might and power” than humans (2 Peter 2:11, see also Matthew 28:2). Angels use their power to battle against Satan’s demonic forces (Daniel 10:13, Revelation 12:7–8, 20:1–3).
\r\n\r\n
During our earthly lives, we’re “lower than the angels” (Hebrews 2:7). But as powerful as angels are, when Jesus returns, followers of Christ will be raised higher than them (1 Corinthians 6:3).
\r\n\r\n
10. We don’t know when angels were created
\r\nGenesis 2:1 tells us that the angels were made at some point before the seventh day of creation: “Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them” (“host” here refers to the heavenly beings).
\r\n\r\n
Exodus 20:11 is even more explicit: “In six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day.” We can at least confirm that all the angels were created by the sixth day of creation.
\r\n\r\n
But can we be any more specific? There may be a hint at the creation of angelic beings on the first day of creation, when we read that “in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1), immediately followed by, “the earth was without form and void” (Genesis 1:2). There’s no mention of the heavens in this second verse. This may be intended to contrast the emptiness of the earth is with the heavens, where God already created angelic beings. This idea could be supported by Job, where we read that “the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy” when God laid the “cornerstone” of the earth and sunk its “bases” (Job 38:6–7). If the angels (“the sons of God”) shouted for joy when God was forming the earth, this could imply that God created the angelic beings early on the first day. However, this is only speculation.
\r\n\r\n
11. Angels are examples for us
\r\nAngels show us what perfect obedience looks like. Jesus teaches us to pray, “Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven” (Matthew 6:10), and in heaven God’s will is done by angels, immediately, joyfully, and without question. Their delight is to be God’s humble servants, faithfully performing their assigned tasks, great or small. Our desire and prayer should be that we will do the same.
\r\n\r\n
Angels also model worship. John sees around God’s throne a great angelic army, “numbering myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands, saying with a loud voice, ‘Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing!’” (Revelation 5:11–12). If the angels find it their highest joy to praise God continuously, shouldn’t we, too?
\r\n\r\n
12. Angels carry out some of God’s plans
\r\nThere are numerous ways in which angels carry out God’s plans on earth:
\r\n\r\n
· They frequently bring God’s messages to people (Luke 1:11–19, Acts 8:26, 10:3–8, 22, 27:23–24).
\r\n· They carry out some of God’s judgments, bringing a plague upon Israel (2 Samuel 24:16–17), smiting the leaders of the Assyrian army (2 Chronicles 32:21), striking King Herod dead because he did not give God glory (Acts 12:23), or pouring out bowls of God’s wrath on the earth (Revelation 16:1).
\r\n· When Christ returns, angels will come with him as a great army accompanying their King and Lord (Matthew 16:27, Luke 9:26, 2 Thessalonians 1:7).
\r\n· They patrol the earth as God’s representatives (Zechariah 1:10–11).
\r\n· They carry out war against demonic forces (Daniel 10:13; Revelation 12:7–8).
\r\n· John records that an angel “seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the Devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years, and threw him into the pit . . .” (Revelation 20:1–3).
\r\n· When Christ returns, an archangel will proclaim his coming (1 Thessalonians 4:16, see also Revelation 18:1–2, 21, 19:17–18, and other passages).
\r\n\r\n
13. Angels directly glorify God
\r\nHumans aren’t the only intelligent, moral creatures who glorify God. The Psalmist declares:
\r\n\r\n
“Angels glorify God for who he is in himself, for his excellence.Bless the Lord, O you his angels,you mighty ones who do his word,hearkening to the voice of his word!” (Psalm 103:20, see also 148:2)
\r\n\r\n
The seraphim continually praise God for his holiness (Isaiah 6:2–3), and so do the four living creatures (Revelation 4:8).
\r\n\r\n
Angels also glorify God as they witness his plan unfold. When Christ was born in Bethlehem, a multitude of angels praised God and said, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among men with whom he is pleased!” (Luke 2:14, see also Hebrews 1:6). Jesus tells us, “There is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents” (Luke 15:10), indicating that angels rejoice when someone turns from sin and trusts in Christ.
\r\n\r\n
Peter tells us that “angels long to look” (1 Peter 1:12) into the glories of the plan of salvation as it works out in the lives of believers each day. To emphasize the seriousness of particular commands, Paul reminds us that our actions are carried out in the presence of angelic witnesses: “In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus and of the elect angels I charge you to keep these rules without favor, doing nothing from partiality” (1 Timothy 5:21, see also 1 Corinthians 4:9). If Timothy follows Paul’s instructions, angels will witness his obedience and glorify God. If he neglects to obey, angels will also see and be grieved.
\r\n\r\n
14. Angels are not to be worshipped
\r\n“Worship of angels” was one of the false doctrines being taught at Colossae (Colossians 2:18). In the book of Revelation, an angel warns John not to worship him: “You must not do that! I am a fellow servant with you and your brethren who hold the testimony of Jesus. Worship God” (Revelation 19:10).
\r\n\r\n
We shouldn’t pray to angels, either. God is able to answer prayer. Paul warns us against thinking that any other “mediator” can come between us and God, “for there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus” (1 Timothy 2:5). If we were to pray to angels, it would implicitly give them a status equal to God. There are no examples in Scripture of anyone praying to an angel or asking angels for help.
\r\n\r\n
Moreover, Scripture gives us no warrant to seek appearances of angels. They manifest themselves unsought. To seek such appearances would seem to indicate an unhealthy curiosity or a desire for some kind of spectacular event rather than a love for God and devotion to him and his work. Though angels did appear to people at various times in Scripture, the people apparently never sought those appearances. Our role is rather to talk to the Lord, who is himself the commander of all angelic forces. However, it would not seem wrong to ask God to fulfill his promise in Psalm 91:11 to send angels to protect us in times of need.
\r\n\r\n
The value of systematic theology
\r\nMuch of what we see or hear about angels in culture is based on speculation, non-biblical sources, or just plain fantasy. The Bible has a lot to say about them—so much so, in fact, that it can be hard to say which of the things we hear about angels are rooted in Scripture. That’s where systematic theology is helpful: scholars like Wayne Grudem carefully organize everything the Bible says about a topic, so you can see it all at once.

\r\n\r\nThe 12 disciples/apostles of Jesus were the foundation stones of His church, several even wrote portions of the Bible. In Revelation 21:14 we are told that the twelve foundations of the wall of the New Jerusalem will have in them the names of the twelve disciples/apostles. It is evident, therefore, that God attaches great importance to these 12 men.
\r\n\r\n
As we study these courageous first-century lives, and what discipleship meant in the time of Jesus, we may expect to be aided in developing a Spirit-directed twenty-first-century discipleship as Christ must have meant it to be.
\r\n\r\n
The following biographical information about the 12 original disciples of Jesus uses the New Testament accounts along with the most respected legends and traditions. We do not mean to infer, that legend and tradition constitute historical fact. We do feel, however, that they do have value in the study of the lives of these men who \"…turned the world upside down…\"
\r\n\r\n
Simon/Peter
\r\n\r\n
Simon Peter, son of Jonas, was a fisherman who lived in Bethsaida and Capernaum. He did evangelistic and missionary work among the Jews, going as far as Babylon. He was a member of the Inner Circle and authored the two New Testament epistles which bear his name. Tradition says he was crucified, head downward, in Rome.
\r\n\r\n
In every apostolic list, the name Peter is mentioned first. However, Peter had other names. At the time of Christ, the common language was Greek and the family language was Hebrew. So his Greek name was Simon (Mark 1:16; John 1:40, 41). His Hebrew name was Cephas (1 Corinthians 1:12; 3:22; 9:5 and Galatians 2:9). The Greek meaning of Simon is rock. The Arabic meaning of Cephas is also rock.
\r\n\r\n
By trade, Peter was a fisherman. He was a married man (1 Corinthians 9:5) and his home was Capernaum. Jesus probably made His headquarters there when He visited Capernaum. Peter was also a Galilean as was typical of many of the other disciples. Josephus described the Galileans this way, \"They were ever fond of innovation and by nature disposed to change and delighted in sedition. They were ever ready to follow the leader and to begin an insurrection. They were quick in temper and given to quarreling and they were very chivalrous men.\" The Talmud says this of the Galileans, \"They were more anxious for honor than for gain, quick-tempered, impulsive, emotional, easily aroused by an appeal to adventure, loyal to the end.\"
\r\n\r\n
Peter was a typical Galilean. Among the twelve, Peter was the leader. He stands out as a spokesman for all the twelve Apostles. It is he who asked the meaning of the difficult saying in Matthew 15:15. It is he who asked how often he must forgive. It is he who inquired about the reward for all of those who follow Jesus. It is he who first confessed Jesus and declared Him as the Son of the Living God. It is he who was at the Mount of Transfiguration. It is he who saw Jairus' daughter raised to life. Yet, it is he who denied Christ before a maiden. He was an Apostle and a missionary who laid down his life for his Lord. It is true, Peter had many faults, but he had always the saving grace of the loving heart. No matter how many times he had fallen and failed, he always recovered his courage and integrity.
\r\n\r\n
Peter was martyred on a cross. Peter requested that he might be crucified head downward for he was not worthy to die as his Lord had died. His apostolic symbol is a cross upside down with crossed keys.
\r\n\r\n
James
\r\n\r\n
James, the Elder, Boanerges, son of Zebedee and Salome, brother of John the Apostle; a fisherman who lived in Bethsaida, Capernaum and Jerusalem. He preached in Jerusalem and Judea and was beheaded by Herod, AD 44 (Acts 12:1,2). He was a member of the Inner Circle, so called because they were accorded special privileges. The New Testament tells us very little about James. His name never appears apart from that of his brother, John. They were an inseparable pair (Mark 1:19-20; Matthew 4:21; Luke 5:1-11).

He was a man of courage and forgiveness, a man without jealousy, living in the shadow of John, a man of extraordinary faith. He was the first of the twelve to become a martyr. His symbol is three shells, the sign of his pilgrimage by the sea.

John
\r\n\r\n
John Boanerges, son of Zebedee and Salome, brother of James, the Apostle. He was known as the Beloved Disciple. A fisherman who lived in Bethsaida, Capernaum and Jerusalem, he was a member of the Inner Circle. He wrote the Gospel of John, I John, II John, III John and Revelation. He preached among the churches of Asia Minor. Banished to the Isle of Patmos, he was later freed and died a natural death. John was one of the prominent Apostles. He is mentioned in many places in the New Testament. He was a man of action; he was very ambitious; and a man with an explosive temper and an intolerant heart. His second name was Boanerges, which means son of Thunder. He and his brother, James, came from a more well-to-do family than the rest of the 12 Apostles. Since his father had hired servants in his fishing business (Mark 1:20) he may have felt himself above the rest. He was close to Peter. They were acting together in the ministry. Peter, however, was always the spokesman for the band.

John mellowed with time. At the latter part of his life, he had forgotten everything, including his ambition and explosive temper, except his Lord's command of love.
\r\n\r\n
It is said that an attempt was made on his life by giving him a chalice of poison from which God spared him. He died of natural causes. A chalice with a snake in it is his symbol.
\r\n\r\n
Andrew
\r\n\r\n
Andrew was the brother of Peter, and a son of Jonas. He lived in Bethsaida and Capernaum and was a fisherman before Jesus called him. Originally he was a disciple of John the Baptist (Mark 1:16-18). Andrew brought his brother, Peter, to Jesus (John 1:40). He is the first to have the title of Home and Foreign Missionary. He is claimed by three countries as their Patron Saint-Russia, Scotland and Greece. Many scholars say that he preached in Scythia, Greece and Asia Minor.
\r\n\r\n
Andrew introduced others to Jesus. Although circumstances placed him in a position where it would have been easy for him to become jealous and resentful, he was optimistic and well content in second place. His main purpose in life was to bring others to the master.
\r\n\r\n
According to tradition, it was in Achaia, Greece, in the town of Patra that Andrew died a martyr. When Governor Aepeas' wife was healed and converted to the Christian faith, and shortly after that the Governor's brother became a Christian. Aepeas was enraged. He arrested Andrew and condemned him to die on the cross. Andrew, feeling unworthy to be crucified on the same-shaped cross as his Master, begged that his be different. So, he was crucified on an X-shaped cross, which is still called Saint Andrew's cross and which is one of his apostolic symbols. A symbol of two crossed fish has also been applied to Andrew, because he was formerly a fisherman.

Bartholomew or Nathanael
\r\n\r\n
Bartholomew Nathanael, son of Talmai, lived in Cana of Galilee. His apostolic symbol is three parallel knives. Tradition says he was a missionary in Armenia. A number of scholars believe that he was the only one of the 12 disciples who came from royal blood, or noble birth. His name means Son of Tolmai or Talmai(2 Samuel 3:3). Talmai was king of Geshur whose daughter, Maacah, was the wife of David, mother of Absolom.

Bartholomew's name appears with every list of the disciples (Matthew 10:3; Mark 3:18; Luke 6:14; Acts 1:13). This was not a first name, however; it was his second name. His first name probably was Nathanael, whom Jesus called \"An Israelite indeed, in whom there is no guile\" (John 1:47).
\r\n\r\n
The New Testament gives us very little information about him. Tradition indicates he was a great searcher of the Scripture and a scholar in the law and the prophets. He developed into a man of complete surrender to the Carpenter of Nazareth, and one of the Church's most adventurous missionaries. He is said to have preached with Philip in Phrygia and Hierapolis; also in Armenia. The Armenian Church claims him as its founder and martyr. However, tradition says that he preached in India, and his death seems to have taken place there. He died as a martyr for his Lord. He was flayed alive with knives.

James the Lesser or the Younger
\r\n\r\n
James, the Lesser or Younger, son of Alpheus, or Cleophas and Mary, lived in Galilee. He was the brother of the Apostle Jude.
\r\n\r\n
According to tradition he wrote the Epistle of James, preached in Palestine and Egypt and was crucified in Egypt. James was one of the little-known disciples. Some scholars believe he was the brother of Matthew, the tax collector. James was a man of strong character and one of the most fiery type. Still another tradition says that he died as a martyr and his body was sawed in pieces. The saw became his apostolic symbol.

Judas
\r\n\r\n
Judas Iscariot, the traitor, was the son of Simon who lived in Kerioth of Judah. He betrayed Jesus for thirty pieces of silver and afterwards hanged himself (Matthew 26:14,16).
\r\n\r\n
Judas, the man who became the traitor, is the supreme enigma of the New Testament because it is so hard to see how anyone who was so close to Jesus, who saw so many miracles and heard so much of the Master's teaching could ever betray him into the hands of his enemies.
\r\n\r\n
His name appears in three lists of the 12 Apostles (Matthew 10:4; Mark 3:19; Luke 6:19). It is said that Judas came from Judah near Jericho. He was a Judean and the rest of the disciples were Galileans. He was the treasurer of the band and among the outspoken leaders.
\r\n\r\n
It is said that Judas was a violent Jewish Nationalist who had followed Jesus in hope that through Him his nationalistic flame and dreams might be realized. No one can deny that Judas was a covetous man and at times he used his position as treasurer of the band to pilfer from the common purse. There is no certain reason as to why Judas betrayed his master; but it is not his betrayal that put Jesus on the cross-it was our sins. His apostolic symbol is a hangman's noose, or a money purse with pieces of silver falling from it.

Jude or Thaddeus
\r\n\r\n
Jude, Thaddeus, or Lebbeus, son of Alpheus or Cleophas and Mary. He was a brother of James the Younger. He was one of the very little-known Apostles and lived in Galilee. Tradition says he preached in Assyria and Persia and died a martyr in Persia.
\r\n\r\n
Jerome called Jude \"Trinomious\" which means \"a man with three names.\" In Mark 3:18 he is called Thaddeus. In Matthew 10:3 he is called Lebbeus. His surname was Thaddeus. In Luke 6:16 and Acts 1:13 he is called Judas the brother of James. Judas Thaddeus also was called Judas the Zealot.
\r\n\r\n
By character he was an intense and violent Nationalist with the dream of world power and domination by the Chosen People. In the New Testament records (John 14:22 NIV) he asked Jesus at the Last Supper, \"But Lord, why do you intend to show yourself to us and not to the world?\" Judas Thaddeus was interested in making Christ known to the world. Not as a suffering Saviour, however, but as ruling King. We can see plainly from the answer Jesus gave him, that the way of power can never be substituted for the way of love.
\r\n\r\n
It is said that Jude went to preach the gospel in Edessa near the Euphrates River. There he healed many and many believed in the name of the Master. Jude went from there to preach the Gospel in other places. He was killed with arrows at Ararat. The chosen symbol for him is the ship because he was a missionary thought to be a fisherman.
\r\n\r\n
Matthew or Levi
\r\n\r\n
Matthew, or Levi, son of Alpheus, lived in Capernaum. He was a publican or tax collector. He wrote the Gospel that bears his name. He died a martyr in Ethiopia. The call of Matthew to the apostolic band is mentioned in Mark 2:14, Matthew 9:9 and Luke 5:27-28. From these passages, we learn that Matthew also was called Levi. It was a common custom in the Middle East at the time of Christ for men to have two names. Matthew's names mean \"a gift of God.\" The name Levi could have been given to him by Jesus. It is likely that James the lesser, who was one of the twelve Apostles, was Matthew's brother, also the son of Alpheus. Although we know little about Matthew personally, the outstanding fact about him is that he was a tax collector.
\r\n\r\n
The King James Version calls him a publican, which in Latin is Publicanus, meaning engaged in public service, a man who handled public money, or a tax gatherer. Of all the nations in the world, the Jews were the most vigorous haters of tax gatherers. To the devout Jew, God was the only one to whom it was right to pay tribute in taxes. To pay it to anyone else was to infringe on the rights of God. The tax collectors were hated not on religious grounds only but because most of them were notoriously unjust.
\r\n\r\n
In the minds of many honest, Jewish men, these tax collectors were regarded as criminals. In New Testament times they were classified with harlots, Gentiles and sinners (Matthew 18:17); (Matthew 21:31, 33); (Matthew 9:10); (Mark 2:15,16); (Luke 5:30). Tax collectors had been known to assess duty payable at impossible sums and then offer to lend the money to travelers at a high rate of interest. Such was Matthew. Yet, Jesus chose a man all men hated and made him one of His men. It took Jesus Christ to see the potential in the tax collector of Capernaum. Matthew was unlike the other Apostles, who were mostly fishermen. He could use a pen, and by his pen he became the first man to present to the world, in the Hebrew language, an account of the teaching of Jesus. It is clearly impossible to estimate the debt that Christianity owes to this despised tax gatherer. The average man would have thought it impossible to reform Matthew, but to God all things are possible. Matthew became the first man to write down the teachings of Jesus. He was a missionary of the Gospel, who laid down his life for the faith of his Master. The apostolic symbol of Matthew is three money bags which reminds us that he was a tax collector before Jesus called him.

Philip
\r\n\r\n
Tradition says that disciple Philip preached in Phrygia and died a martyr at Hierapolis. Philip came from Bethsaida, the town from which Peter and Andrew came (John 1:44). The likelihood is that he, too, was a fisherman. Although the first three Gospels record his name (Matthew 10:3; Mark 3:18; Luke 6:14; Acts 1:13), it is in the Gospel of John that Philip becomes a living personality.
\r\n\r\n
Scholars disagree on Philip. In Acts 6:5, we have Philip as one of the seven ordained deacons. Some say this is a different Philip. Some believe this is the Apostle. If this is the same Philip, then his personality came more to life because he had a successful campaign in Samaria. He led the Ethiopian eunuch to Christ (Acts 8:26). He also stayed with Paul in Caesarea (Acts 21:8) and was one of the major figures in the missionary enterprise of the early church.
\r\n\r\n
The Gospel of John shows Philip as one of the first to whom Jesus addressed the words, \"Follow Me.\" When Philip met Christ, he immediately found Nathanael and told him that \"we have found him, of whom Moses … and the prophets, did write.\" Nathanael was skeptical. But Philip did not argue with him; he simply answered, \"Come and see.\" This story tells us two important things about Philip. First, it shows his right approach to the skeptic and his simple faith in Christ. Second, it shows that he had a missionary instinct.
\r\n\r\n
Philip was a man with a warm heart and a pessimistic head. He was one who would very much like to do something for others, but who did not see how it could be done. Yet, this simple Galilean gave all he had. In return God used him. It is said that he died by hanging. While he was dying, he requested that his body be wrapped not in linen but in papyrus for he was not worthy that even his dead body should be treated as the body of Jesus had been treated. The symbol of Philip is a basket, because of his part in the feeding of the five thousand. It is he that stressed the cross as a sign of Christianity and victory.

Simon the Zealot
\r\n\r\n
Simon, the Zealot, one of the little-known followers called the Canaanite or Zelotes, lived in Galilee. Tradition says he was crucified.
\r\n\r\n
In two places in the King James Version he is called a Canaanite (Matthew 10:4; Mark 3:18). However, in the other two places he is called Simon Zelotes (Luke 6:15; Acts 1:13).
\r\n\r\n
The New Testament gives us practically nothing on him personally except that it says he was a Zealot. The Zealots were fanatical Jewish Nationalists who had heroic disregard for the suffering involved and the struggle for what they regarded as the purity of their faith. The Zealots were crazed with hatred for the Romans. It was this hate for Rome that destroyed the city of Jerusalem. Josephus says the Zealots were reckless persons, zealous in good practices and extravagant and reckless in the worst kind of actions.
\r\n\r\n
From this background, we see that Simon was a fanatical Nationalist, a man devoted to the Law, a man with bitter hatred for anyone who dared to compromise with Rome. Yet, Simon clearly emerged as a man of faith. He abandoned all his hatred for the faith that he showed toward his Master and the love that he was willing to share with the rest of the disciples and especially Matthew, the Roman tax collector.
\r\n\r\n
Simon, the Zealot, the man who once would have killed in loyalty to Israel, became the man who saw that God will have no forced service. Tradition says he died as a martyr. His apostolic symbol is a fish lying on a Bible, which indicates he was a former fisherman who became a fisher of men through preaching.
\r\n\r\n
Thomas Didymus
\r\n\r\n
Thomas Didymus lived in Galilee. Tradition says he labored in Parthia, Persia, and India, suffering martyrdom near Madras, at Mt. St. Thomas, India.
\r\n\r\n
Thomas was his Hebrew name and Didymus was his Greek name. At times he was called Judas. Matthew, Mark and Luke tell us nothing about Thomas except his name. However, John defines him more clearly in his Gospel. Thomas appeared in the raising of Lazarus (John 11:2-16), in the Upper Room (John 14:1-6) where he wanted to know how to know the way where Jesus was going. In John 20:25, we see him saying unless he sees the nail prints in Jesus' hand and the gash of the spear in His side he will not believe. That's why Thomas became known as Doubting Thomas.
\r\n\r\n
By nature, Thomas was a pessimist. He was a bewildered man. Yet, he was a man of courage. He was a man who could not believe until he had seen. He was a man of devotion and of faith. When Jesus rose, he came back and invited Thomas to put his finger in the nail prints in his hands and in his side. Here, we see Thomas making the greatest confession of faith, \"My Lord and my God.\" Thomas' doubts were transformed into faith. By this very fact Thomas' faith became great, intense and convincing. It is said that he was commissioned to build a palace for the king of India, and he was killed with a spear as a martyr for his Lord. His symbol is a group of spears, stones and arrows.
\r\n\r\n
Who replaced Judas Iscariot?
\r\n\r\n
Matthias was selected to replace Judas as recorded in Acts 1:15-26. The other man who was also in consideration was named Joseph or Barsabas, and surnamed Justus. Lots were cast and eventually Matthias was chosen. Acts 1:24-26 records the following, \"And they prayed and said, “You, O Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which of these two You have chosen to take part in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place.” And he was numbered with the eleven apostles.” The Bible is sparse on additional details relating to Matthias, but it does say that Matthias was with Jesus since His baptism until his resurrection. Besides the book of Acts, Matthias isn’t mentioned anywhere else in the Bible. According to historical sources Matthias lived til 80 A.D. and spread the gospel on the shores of the Caspian and Cappadocia.

That makes sense, right? Jesus is the one to whom all authority in heaven and earth has been given (Matthew 28:18). Jesus is the one of whom it will be said, forever, “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing!” (Revelation 5:12). He’s the one to whom every knee will bow (Philippians 2:10) — the one on account of whom all the tribes of the earth will wail (Revelation 1:7), and from whom the fury of God’s wrath will be executed (Revelation 19:15).
\r\n\r\nJesus has that kind of supremacy — so what he says matters. And beyond that, we’ve been united to Jesus by faith (Romans 6:5), made alive in him by grace (Ephesians 2:4–5), counted righteous in him because of his work (Galatians 2:16). Jesus, in all of his supremacy, is also our shepherd — so we know his voice (John 10:27).
\r\n\r\n
Therefore, by virtue of his power and grace, because he is the Sovereign and our Savior, when he tells his church to make disciples of all nations, we really want to do that.
\r\n\r\n
Toward a Definition
\r\n\r\n
Jesus commissions us to “go” — because of his authority — “and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you” (Matthew 28:19–20).
\r\n\r\n
This raises a fundamental question, though — one that even takes priority over the how-to’s of discipleship. What does it actually mean to be a “disciple” of Jesus? If we are going to make disciples, we need to know what that is.
\r\n\r\n
The standard definition of “disciple” (noun) is someone who adheres to the teachings of another. It is a follower or a learner. It refers to someone who takes up the ways of someone else. Applied to Jesus, a disciple is someone who learns from him to live like him — someone who, because of God’s awakening grace, conforms his or her words and ways to the words and ways of Jesus. Or, you might say, as others have put it in the past, disciples of Jesus are themselves “little Christs” (Acts 26:28) (2 Corinthians 1:21).
\r\n\r\n
The four Gospels give us the definitive portrait of Jesus in his life on earth, and if we really want to know what it means to be his disciple, the Gospels are likely where we start. In particular, John’s Gospel shows us three complementary perspectives on what it means to follow Jesus, each patterned after Jesus himself. Building off of John’s profile, we could say that a disciple of Jesus is a worshiper, a servant, and a witness
\r\n\r\n
Disciple Means Worshiper
\r\n\r\n
Most fundamentally, to follow Jesus means to worship him exclusively. This is at the heart of Jesus’s ministry on earth. As he told the woman at the well, the Father is seeking true worshipers — not faux worshipers, but true worshipers — those who worship him in spirit and truth (John 4:23–24). Which means, as it did in her case, we shouldn’t be so quick to change the subject. If we will follow Jesus, we must worship God — through Jesus, because he is our Mediator (John 14:6) (1 Timothy 2:5), and Jesus himself, because he is God (John 10:30; 20:28–29).
\r\n\r\n
This is the fundamental perspective of a disciple because it is more ultimate than anything else we are or do, and most distinctive in our context. As far as ultimate, worshiping Jesus — gladly reflecting back to him the radiance of his worth — is the greatest act for any creature. As far as context, nothing will irritate our pluralistic society more than being an exclusive worshiper of Jesus. Lots of people are cool with Jesus (at least their notion of him), and even following the “ways” of Jesus, when it leaves out the exclusivity part. Jesus the Moral Teacher, the Nice Guy, the Judge-Not-Lest-You-Be-Judged Motivational Speaker — that Jesus is everybody’s homeboy. But that is not the real Jesus. That’s a manmade figure — a far cry from the portrait Jesus gives of himself.
\r\n\r\n
To follow Jesus, to be his disciple, doesn’t mean community involvement and the veneer of tolerance. It means, mainly, first and central, to worship him — with joy at the heart. Making disciples of Jesus means gathering his worshipers.
\r\n\r\n
Disciple Means Servant
\r\n\r\n
John shows another picture of the Jesus we’re to worship, and this time he is kneeling before his disciples to wash their feet (John 13:5). I know, it doesn’t sound right, especially when we think of him as the object of our exclusive praise. It didn’t sound right to Peter either, until Jesus said, “If I do not wash you, you have no share with me” (John 13:8). But Jesus is a servant. He came to earth not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as the rescue for sinners (Mark 10:45).
\r\n\r\n
And as a servant, Jesus says of his disciples, to his disciples, “If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you” (John 13:14–15). In one sense, the posture of servant should characterize Jesus’s disciples on all fronts. But in another sense, being a servant like Jesus has a particular focus on disciples serving disciples. It’s a family thing. “Let us do good to everyone,” Paul said, “and especially to those who are of the household of faith” (Galatians 6:10).
\r\n\r\n
This one-another angle is where Jesus takes us in giving “a new commandment,” just after he washed the Twelve’s feet: “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another” (John 13:34; see also 1 John 3:23). In fact, it is this love that disciples have for one another that identifies us as disciples of Jesus to a watching world (John 13:35), and even assures us of saving faith (1 John 3:14).
\r\n\r\n
To be a disciple of Jesus means to serve like him. It means to serve, primarily, by looking at your brothers and sisters and going low in acts of love, even when it’s an inconvenience to yourself, even when it flip-flops the world’s social order and expectations. Making disciples of Jesus means making servants who love one another.
\r\n\r\n
Disciple Means Witness
\r\n\r\n
John gives us another helpful picture of what it means to be a disciple of Jesus. This time it comes in the commission of Jesus, when he says of his disciples, to his disciples, “As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you” (John 20:21; see also John 17:18). This means that Jesus’s disciples are on a mission. It means, in the broadest sense, that they are missionaries, that they are envisioned and empowered to step into this world (not of it, but sent into it) as his witnesses (Acts 1:8).
\r\n\r\n
Jesus was sent for a purpose — to reveal God and redeem sinners (John 1:14, 12) — and he set his face like flint to see it accomplished (Luke 9:51; Isaiah 50:7). We too, as his disciples, filled by his Spirit, are sent for a purpose — to tell his good news (Romans 10:14–17).
\r\n\r\n
To be a disciple of Jesus means to point people to him. It means to tell the old, old story of Jesus and his love so that others would know him and worship him. It means, in other words, that we gladly seek more worshipers-servants-missionaries. Which is to say, a disciple of Jesus makes disciples of Jesus, as Jesus tells us to (Matthew 28:18–20).

And, of course, when Jesus speaks we listen.

Job was not only righteous, but also wealthy. We also know Job was a man greatly tested by God and even more greatly blessed by God.
\r\n\r\nJob Was Righteous and a Gentile.
\r\n“In the land of Uz [modern day Saudi Arabia], there lived a man whose name was Job” (Job 1:1). Job was not an Israelite. “His non-Israelite status explains the absence of many key theological elements in the book, including law, covenant, temple and reference to Yahweh,” according to the NIV Cultural Backgrounds Study Bible.
\r\n\r\n
Other than being from Uz, the first thing the Bible tells us about Job is that he was righteous and godly, “blameless and upright,” a man who “feared God and shunned evil” (Job 1:2). One might assume from these first two verses that Job was a simple man of humble means because it’s a rare person whose heart is fixed on God and also has everything this life has to offer. But Job was a very rich and great man by the world’s standards.
\r\n\r\n
Job Was Wealthy.
\r\nHe had 10 children, many servants, and his livestock numbered in the thousands. “He was the greatest man among all the people of the East” (Job 1:3): great by man’s standards and by God’s. Incredible. We can surmise that every need Job had was met and every desire was fulfilled.
\r\n\r\n
Job 1:4-5 tells us that Job’s sons were also rich and would annually, on their birthdays, invite their sisters to partake with them in lavish feasts lasting for days. Job served as the family priest. He feared God so much that he made sure his children were purified following the feasts in case, in their revelry, they sinned against God. “Early in the morning he would sacrifice a burnt offering for each of them, thinking, ‘Perhaps my children have sinned and cursed God in their hearts.’ This was Job’s regular custom” (Job 1:5).
\r\n\r\n
Job’s life, depicted in the exposition of the story, is picture-perfect. The unknown author is depicting the main character’s goodness and innocence, setting the audience up for the climax in which “Satan” is granted permission by the Lord to test Job’s faith and faithfulness.
\r\n\r\n
“Does Job fear God for nothing?” Satan replied. “Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has? You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land. But now stretch out your hand and strike everything he has, and he will surely curse you to your face.”The Lord said to Satan, “Very well, then, everything he has is in your power, but on the man himself do not lay a finger” (Job 1:9-12).

And then later in the story…
\r\n\r\n
“Skin for skin!” Satan replied. “A man will give all he has for his own life. But now stretch out your hand and strike his flesh and bones, and he will surely curse you to your face.”
\r\n\r\n
The Lord said to Satan, “Very well, then, he is in your hands; but you must spare his life” (Job 2:4-6).
\r\n\r\n
Innocent suffering was common in other ancient Near Eastern stories. In The Babylonian Theodicy (c. 1000 BC), a character similar to Job discusses his suffering with his friends. According to Zondervan’s Cultural Background Study Bible:
\r\n\r\n
“The sufferer expresses this wish: ‘May the god who has cast me off grant help, may the goddess who has [forsaken me] take pity.’ … In the polytheistic religions of the ancient Near East, innocent suffering could be attributed to another deity or to demons. There were protective deities to whom one could turn when the main deities could no longer be relied upon. For Job, the situation is more complicated: If there is only one God, what do you do if he has become your enemy?”
\r\n\r\n
How Did Job Suffer?
\r\n\r\n
Job then experiences ultimate human suffering at the hand of Satan but allowed by God.
\r\n\r\n
The Sabeans attacked and stole all of Job’s oxen and donkeys and killed a portion of his servants (Job 1:14-15).
\r\n\r\n
Fire fell from the sky “and burned up the sheep” and more of Job’s servants (Job 1:16).
\r\n\r\n
The Chaldeans attacked and stole Job’s camels, killing even more of his servants (Job 1:17).
\r\n\r\n
“A mighty wind swept in from the desert” and destroyed the house where all of Job’s children were gathered for a feast, killing all of them (Job 1:18-19).
\r\n\r\n
Satan “afflicted Job with painful sores” from the bottoms of his feet to the top of his head (Job 2:7).
\r\n\r\n
How Did Job Respond?
\r\n\r\n
Following the first four tragedies, Job mourns (“tore his robe and shaved his head”) and then worships (Job 1:20-21) uttering the words of this famous passage of Scripture: “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will depart. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised.”
\r\n\r\n
After Satan afflicts him with a flesh-eating disease, Job sits in a heap of ashes, scraping himself with shards of pottery and wishing he had never been born (Job 2:8; Job 3:1). His theology, however, remains intact even after his wife encourages him to “curse God and die!” (Job 2:9).
\r\n\r\n
“He replied, ‘You are talking like a foolish woman. Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble?’In all this, Job did not sin in what he said” (Job 2:10).
\r\n\r\n
Job’s Friends Come to Comfort Him.
\r\n\r\n
When his friends “Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite,” hear about his unthinkable calamities, they pay him a visit to “comfort him,” but they find him nearly unrecognizable, so they sit on the ground with him for a week not speaking because his suffering is so great (Job 2:11-13).
\r\n\r\n
“Job’s friends come from places or regions that are impossible to identify with certainty, but they are presumably situated in the region of Edom,” according to Zondervan’s Cultural Background Study Bible.
\r\n\r\n
This was the right response. When a friend is suffering greatly, be there for them. Don’t say much, if anything, just be there, and pray. Unfortunately, Job’s friends finally start talking.
\r\n\r\n
For 34 chapters, Job and his friends discuss suffering. Job’s suffering must be the result of his sin, his friends assume. Job, however, as we learned in chapter 1, feared God and shunned evil. Certainly, his suffering was not the result of a sin he had committed against God. He was even careful enough to make sure his children were pure before God. What sin could he have committed that would cause God to punish him worse than every other human being he knew?
\r\n\r\n
Discussing it with his friends did not help. Clearly, Job needed to talk it out with God Himself. “I desire to speak to the Almighty and to argue my case with God” (Job 13:3).
\r\n\r\n
God Answers Job and Restores His Fortunes.
\r\n\r\n
Ultimately, Job gets his conversation with God. God reminds Job of His deity and authority, of His eternality and power over creation, of His wisdom and omnipresence, of His understanding and supremacy (Job 38-41). Job’s response to the character of God is:
\r\n\r\n
“I know that you can do all things,and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted. ‘Who is this that hides counsel without knowledge?’ Therefore I have uttered what I did not understand, things too wonderful for me, which I did not know” (Job 42:1-3).
\r\n\r\n
After Job was blessed by the reminder of God’s character, he was further blessed as “the LORD restored his fortunes and gave him twice as much as he had before,” (Job 42:10).
\r\n\r\n
His brothers, sisters, and other friends gathered around Job to comfort him. They even gave Job money to help during his hard time (Job 42:11).
\r\n\r\n
God restored Job’s fortune with “14,000 sheep, 6,000 camels, 1,000 yoke of oxen, and 1,000 female donkeys” (Job 42:12). God restored Job’s family with seven sons, three daughters, and four generations of grandchildren (Job 42:13-16).
\r\n\r\n
“And Job died, an old man, and full of days” (Job 42:17).
\r\n\r\n
What Can We Learn from Job’s Suffering?
\r\n\r\n
1. Suffering is a way for God to display His power and glory.“…Suffering cannot be explained by the simple principle of retributive justice, where each person gets what he deserves: suffering for the evil and prosperity for the good,” John Piper said. Often in life, it is the righteous who suffer and the wicked who prosper.
\r\n\r\n
“Why do the wicked live, reach old age, and grow mighty in power? They spend their days in prosperity, and in peace they go down to Sheol. They say to God, ‘Depart from us! We do not desire the knowledge of your ways. What is the Almighty, that we should serve him? And what profit do we get if we pray to him?’” (Job 21:13-15).
\r\n\r\n
In the following New Testament story of suffering, we see that suffering can mean that God is wonderfully at work in a person’s life, producing something miraculous.
\r\n\r\n
“As he passed by, he saw a man blind from birth. And his disciples asked him, ‘Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?’ Jesus answered, ‘It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him’” (John 9:1-3).
\r\n\r\n
2. Suffering is a result of God’s love.
\r\n\r\n
God was not Job’s enemy, as he may have wondered. God had a purpose and a plan, Job simply didn’t know it yet.
\r\n\r\n
“Suffering is not dispensed willy-nilly among the people of God. It is apportioned to us as individually designed, expert therapy by the loving hand of our great Physician. And its aim is that our faith might be refined, our holiness might be enlarged, our soul might be saved, and our God might be glorified,” Piper said.
\r\n\r\n
Who was Job? Job was a man greatly tested by God and even more greatly blessed by God!

\r\n\r\n1. Read a User-friendly Bible Version
\r\nAlthough the Bible was originally written in Hebrew and Greek, there are now a wide variety of Bible versions out there in thousands of different languages. Some of them are more precise; others are easier to follow. One Bible version that’s easy to understand is the New Living Translation (NLT). Another is the New International Version (NIV). 2. Ask God to Help You Understand
\r\nBefore you start to read, ask the Lord to help you to understand. One of the reasons why God sent the Holy Spirit is to show us the truth. John 16:13 says, “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future.” Then after you read the Bible, ask the Lord to show you how to live out what you just read.
\r\n\r\n
3. Start by Reading the Gospel of John
\r\nThe Bible is not just a book that you sit down and read cover to cover like a novel. In fact, it’s different because it actually contains 66 books: 39 in the Old Testament, and 27 in the New Testament. A good place to start would be the Gospel of John because it has clear, simple passages. It also tells you about who Jesus was and what He said. For example, in John 14:6, Jesus said: “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.” No matter where you start reading, though, God will help you to come to know Him more.
\r\n\r\n
4. Read For Five Minutes a Day
\r\nReading through the Bible in one year intimidates many of us. So if you’re not currently reading the Bible, start by reading for just five minutes a day. And if you miss a day, no worries! Pick right up where you left off. Don’t read the Bible as if it was something to check off on your to-do list. Instead, read it as a way to get to know the Lord more.
\r\n\r\n
5. Reflect on What You’ve Read
\r\nWe all struggle, at times, with forgetting something we just read—especially the Bible! Take your time while reading. You may even want to go back and reread the passage slowly. Are there any verses that you like? Write them in a journal. Do you feel God leading you to do anything differently in your life? Record it. Did God answer a prayer? Jot it down! Months—or even years—down the line, you can look back in your journal and see how you’ve grown!
\r\n\r\n
6. Go to a Good Bible Study
\r\nWhile you don’t have to go to a Bible study to read the Bible, it’ll certainly help you learn more about the Bible. There are a lot of Bible studies out there. Whether you’re a man or woman, young or old, married or single, you can find a good Bible study to meet your needs. Check to see if there are any Bible studies at local churches or non-profit organizations in your area.
\r\n\r\n
7. Memorize a Few Favorite Bible Verses
\r\nDon’t think you have to start by memorizing dozens of Bible verses in one sitting—you don’t! Start small by memorizing just one verse. After you’ve read the Bible a few days or a few weeks, look back over what you’ve read to see which Bible verse stands out to you the most. Next, memorize it so that you can say it without hesitation.
\r\n\r\n
8. Meditate on the Bible
\r\nWhatever you think about throughout the day is what will seep into your heart and mind. It will eventually control your life. So if you begin to think about, memorize, and ponder the Bible, it will begin to change your whole mindset. A simple way to do this is to write a Bible verse or a quote on a 3×5 card. Then during the day, take it out and reread it—you’ll be surprised at how much more peace you have by thinking about God’s Word!
\r\n\r\n
9. Apply it to Your Life
\r\nThink that just reading the Bible is enough? Think again! Truth be told, you can’t just read the Bible—you have to do what it says. James 1:22 puts it best: “But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves.” If you read the Bible but don’t do what it says, there will be no life-change. So when you read Scripture, ask yourself: Is God pointing out a truth I should believe? Or, does God want me to change something in my life? Ultimately, whatever you learn from reading the Bible will change your life!
