That has never been the mission of the church.
\r\n
Christian engagement is not about making the state do the church’s job.
It is about ensuring the state does not become a substitute god.
\r\n

\r\n
The Difference Between Influence and Faithfulness
\r\n<div class=\"pencraft pc-display-flex pc-alignItems-center person bears God’s image
\r\n
\r\n
\r\n
Authority is delegated, not absolute
\r\n
\r\n
\r\n
Obedience to God sometimes requires disobedience to Not once.
\r\n
It originates from an 1802 private letter written by Thomas Jefferson to the Danbury Baptist Association. The Baptists were not asking Jefferson how to silence themselves; they were asking how to protect themselves.
\r\n
Their fear was rooted in history. In Europe, state-run churches had persecuted dissenting Christians for centuries. The Baptists wanted assurance that the federal government would never control doctrine, clergy, or conscience.
\r\n
Jefferson responded by explaining that the First Amendment created “a wall of separation between church and state.” But the direction of the wall mattered.
\r\n
It was built:
\r\n
\r\n
\r\n
To keep government out of the church
\r\n
\r\n
\r\n
To prevent a national denomination
\r\n
\r\n
\r\n
To protect free exercise, not suppress it
\r\n
\r\n
\r\n
The First Amendment itself could not be clearer:
\r\n
\r\n
“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.”
\r\n
\r\n
This is a restriction on Congress, not believers.
It bans state religion, not religious reasoning.
It protects expression — it does not erase it.
\r\n
The same generation that ratified this amendment:
\r\n
\r\n
\r\n
Opened congressional sessions with prayer
\r\n
\r\n
\r\n
Appointed chaplains using public funds
\r\n
\r\n
\r\n
Quoted Scripture in political speeches
\r\n
\r\n
\r\n
Taught moral instruction rooted in biblical ethics
\r\n
\r\n
\r\n
They did not see faith and governance as enemies.
